A Blueprint for Change: Utilizing Modular Construction Technology to Deliver Affordable, Energy Efficient, High Quality, Green Housing For Multiple Family Devolopment - A Case Study In Progress

The Boulder County Housing Authority (BCHA) is currently designing a residential community that hopes to illustrate sustainable stewardship of government owned land that is both intelligently planned and regionally connected while striving to achieve Boulder County’s core policy initiatives; Collaboration, Public Service and Sustainability.

As an affordable housing development, BCHA is faced with the challenge of delivering a housing product that is versatile and appealing, well built and durable, sustainable and energy efficient, healthy and inspiring, all while maintaining a price point that meets specific affordable HUD income requirements. While setting the affordable housing bar of achievement, the project has also set a goal of attempting to create a near zero energy envelope which seeks to reduce operating costs through efficient design and construction in conjunction with on-site energy generation.

Off site systems built construction technology is becoming a fundamental and growing equation in achieving these goals. Systems built construction technology has the potential to deliver a high quality product that incorporates green features at a competitive price point. Integrated design and construction capabilities afforded by systems built allows for the complex integration of efficiency, orientation, and energy generation in a fashion often not possible under more standard construction delivery models.

This presentation will touch upon the key elements of the project where green building and construction technology can integrate to provide high quality green affordable housing that not only reduces the impacts on the environment but reduces the economic development risks associated with traditional onsite constructed housing.
