Costs, Benefits, and Best Practices of Colorado Schools: A Practical Guide to Designing
& Construction Schools to LEED Standards

Josh Radoff, Bill Franzen, & Brian Dunbar

As schools across the State begin to adopt green building practices and strive for LEED certification, school districts, municipalities, and design teams are asking themselves: How do I do it? What are the strategies? And what does it cost? This panel will draw from the participants’ experience in working with green schools across the State and speak to the details of project specifics. It will discuss the strategies and credits pursued in achieving the LEED for Schools certification; it will delve into the specific cost and benefit details at these projects – both at the strategy and whole school level; it will discuss a recommended approach for the integrated design process for school constituencies; and it will provide some fundamental design tips that an be used in any new school project (e.g. always daylight your gymnasium; always use demand controlled ventilation in classrooms, etc.).

The session will be a mix of short lectures with audience participation during Q&A, “Ask the experts", and case studies. Attendees will leave the session with a firm understanding of how to achieve LEED for Schools certification, what it could cost to do so, and how to approach the green building process for schools projects.
