Engaged Offsets: Environmental Action Meets Social Justice

Confronted by the questionable effectiveness of contemporary carbon offset programs, we have used the emerging concept of “engaged offsets” to provide transparent, replicable, and local solutions to the global crisis of climate change. Engaged offsets link environmental action with social equity while providing concrete, verifiable results. When fully refined, the product will establish an essential link between the social and environmental justice movements by allowing corporate, private, and municipal entities to reach out to their communities while tackling their GHG emissions.

CTG recently completed a project in the Lower 9th Ward, Holy Cross, and Hollygrove neighborhoods of New Orleans. CTG designed and implemented an engaged offset program benefitting low-income, elderly, and disabled residents recovering from Hurricane Katrina. CTG worked with a major company to characterize the carbon footprint of its tradeshow operations. CTG then arranged for a donation from the company to a nonprofit organization called Hope Has a Face. This donation provided funds for solar hot water heaters to be purchased and installed on renovated housing units and a community center. Over the life of the units, the project will offset over 650 metric tonnes of carbon emissions and save residents thousands of dollars in energy bills. This win-win situation reduces impacts on the planet and helps a community that really needs it.

The engaged offsets model can essentially be applied in any situation calling for emissions reductions.  Public-private partnerships can create win-win situations that provide multiple benefits.  Private companies can implement the process as part of their corporate social responsibility agenda, and state and local governments can demonstrate creative leadership on climate change issues by incorporating engaged offsets into their strategic plans.  Best of all, support is being provided to the communities and organizations that have the greatest need.
