In this presentation, a community team tells the story of a green renovation on a strict budget that is still shooting for the moon environmentally. The presenters include the architect, landscape architect, and developer of the Third Street Center – a nonprofit center for Carbondale, Colorado currently under renovation. This project is steeped in reality – with a construction loan that has a hard ceiling. Still, the team is pushing the renovation to its greening limits while keeping rents appropriate for nonprofits in the long run. Those two goals don’t always coincide – Green and Frugal. We’ll examine our experience with the Living Building Challenge - where we succeeded, where we fell short, why, and by how much. We’ll conclude with the regional policy questions that arise and offer our reflections on the challenge.
