In this presentation, a community team tells the story of a green renovation on a strict budget that is still shooting for the moon environmentally. The presenters include the architect, landscape architect, and developer of the Third Street Centera nonprofit center for Carbondale, Colorado currently under renovation. This project is steeped in reality – with a construction loan that has a hard ceiling. Still, the team is pushing the renovation to its greening limits while keeping rents appropriate for nonprofits in the long run. Those two goals don’t always coincide – Green and Frugal. We’ll examine our experience with the Living Building Challenge - where we succeeded, where we fell short, why, and by how much. We’ll conclude with the regional policy questions that arise and offer our reflections on the challenge. This case study tells a common story of a commercial renovation measured against an uncommon standard – The Living Building Challenge.
