Greenbuild 2009 Observations: Phoenix Shows That Even Deserts Can Be Green

By Stan Wagner, M.E. Group

Going forward, building designers are beginning to merge LEED and zero energy buildings (ZEBs) into highly sustainable, green efficient buildings.

Advancing and Streamlining Guidelines. USGBC is collaborating with organizations such as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) to develop a standard for high performance green building. Standard 189 combines the expertise of the three organizations, and has been integrated into LEED v3.

Jobs. Greenbuild hosted a Green Building Jobs Fair, a first for the organization. Candidates came in from across the country to visit one-on-one with potential employers, and it was a great opportunity for like-minded individuals and companies to connect. Look for it to grow exponentially in the coming years as green building professionals combine the benefits of continuing education and advancing their career.

Social Media. Greenbuild joined in the social media conversation through Tweeting, Facebook, video and blogging. Greenbuild also launched its own Greenbuild Connect, an online forum to share ideas, meet potential customers and communicate in the CyberCafé.

While Greenbuild 2009 has come and gone, there is already buzz about next year's conference and expo in Chicago. The Greenbuild 2010, International Forum, and Federal Summit will be held in McCormick Place from November 16-19.
